Despite its name, the AWL only adopts out cats. They rely on volunteers for fostering and caring for cats, but pay for veterinary services.
Montgomery County Animal Control Division's Adoption Center

Brand-new adoption center with facilities for many different kinds of animals, including cats, dogs, reptiles, rabbits and small animals, and birds. Open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 12 to 7 and Saturday and Sunday 12 to 5.
Call the police non-emergency number 301-279-8000 to report animal-related issues and complaints.
Open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the week. Dogs and cats available for adoption at the South Stonestreet Avenue shelter.
Montgomery County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MCSPCA)
Staffed entirely by volunteers, this organization holds several Adoption Events (listed on the homepage) throughout the year. They can also arrange appointments to visit the animals.

Located in Germantown, this foundation takes in and adopts out horses and other ungulates. By appointment only.

A program centered in Rockville that matches older shelter cats (who are usually harder to adopt out) to humans ages 55 and up. The Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County (above) offers a similar program for those over 60.
